I struggled with the business side of music production because...

I started getting more and more gear that would help me get to my goals.

Some of it is now gone because I never touched it for over a year.

The gear I had did not benefit me except for a handful of things.

I created a video that shows how easy it is to get started producing a song with just a MIDI keyboard, a laptop, a pair of headphones.

And to be honest, it was kind of scary.

I had not produced a song in ages, to the point of completion (embarrassing, I know)

Making that video has inspired me to create more of my own music, and I hope it will for you too.

I truly believe that this is the future of immersive music production and mixing.

Why?

The purpose of making music in the first place first most is to give the audience an immersive experience. We finally have the ability to push past, while also pulling back, to make room for a bigger experience than ever before.

Applications like this will be how "at-home" music producers start releasing tracks without ever needing to invest into a full-blown Atmos studio.

I was finally able to put together my dream studio...

After working three years at a 9-5 job, I put myself in the position to be able to afford investing into good equipment.

But after countless hours of learning how to use the equipment, I realized quickly that my old songs didn't sound any better with higher-quality speakers...

What I had failed to realize is that in the process of investing so much time into research for new equipment, I wasted opportunity to strengthen my skills as a producer.

And while I still work a 9-5 job, I still catch myself putting more hours into learning what equipment I need in the future, rather than using what I already had.

None of this is to say the studio isn't worth it, and I am learning new things working in a Dolby Atmos environment that I never would have learned in stereo

But in all reality, The bigger speakers did not help me hear things better in my mix.

What did help me was to compare the songs I enjoyed that got the results. I am looking for, and started applying them in my own mix, and putting effort into creating a song that sounds good on every device!!

And I just wanted to reassure you that if you don't have the extra money to make that next level up in your studio, you have nothing to worry about.

Well, except the amount of effort you put into creating something fun for yourself.

Being able to create art with the limitations of our environment really shows us how creative us as humans are.

Listen up...

It doesn't last forever. That feeling when you feel like you aren't progressing in a small period of time.

But that's all it is!! It isn't forever. Let's put it into perspective...

When you started a new job, were you familiar with everything on your first day? Probably not...

Even having a just having a degree alone doesn't prepare you for anything hands on.

Once you get used to actually producing music, it can become really easy to be creative.

As much as I hate to say it, social media is consuming and changing every day.

And it isn't abnormal for the way you produce music or how you interact with your fans on social media to change overnight.

That happened with me in producing with Dolby Atmos.

With it becoming the new standard to add-onto the reign of Stereo, I knew this was going to be a rough transition.

But now I have a FULLY functional Atmos studio.

and just reflecting on the past year, when I never thought it could be done, has taught me that having to start over on the things that you enjoy should be enjoyable.

it gives you the opportunity to learn new things that you never thought even existed.

it is always a good thing to find knowledge on something you enjoy that you never thought you would enjoy.

Sometimes it just takes time, but like in the first paragraph...

It won't last forever...

Here is another FACT about Dolby Atmos...

If you listen to the original Mix and Masters of the Beatles in stereo, it does not match up with today's standards of Stereo Production.

There was a transition phase between mono, being the standard, to stereo. Which leads us to today's standard with mixing for headphones.

Just like with mixing stereo with mono compatibility, you have to do the same from Atmos to stereo AND mono.

And since the average person listens to music in headphones nowadays (specifically AirPods), Dolby Atmos has to accommodate to the average consumer. And just like in a stereo mix, you can't just pan things left and right all of the time, nor can you make audio spin around your head in Atmos. That would make people nauseous...

It is all still new to the music industry, but it is the future of music production.

Here is another FACT about Dolby Atmos...

With Apple creating their spatial audio format without Dolby Atmos, The gates to heaven have opened up to creating music in a way that has never been heard before!!

I can already hear the moans and groans about how immersive audio sounds bad in headphones...

and most people don't think about how new this format is to the music industry, and with the music industry had to play around with back in the 60s!!

before stereo recordings were thing, songs were mostly recorded with 10 or less tracks in a mono format.

if you have ever seen the meme about wearing headphones while listening to the Beatles, you understand that the concept of stereo was still new even then.

But if you don't know what I mean, go listen to some tracks by the Beatles, before they remastered their stuff in Dolby Atmos, and compare how it would compete to today's standard in music production,

Spoiler alert, it is drastically different...

But in the meantime, vinyl with the idea of a concept album is still my favorite way of consuming music. I only wish that I could bring a record player everywhere I go!!
